As temps dropped to low teens and it is snowing again not much can be done in shop. Decided to determine how I’m going to finish boat – have discussed a couple of different techniques (Epoxy Primers, System Three Penetrating Epoxy, 2-part polyethylene etc…). Like everything there are multiple “best ways”, just depends upon who you asked. Boatbuilders are more opinionated than most of the fisherman I know.
I’m going to take a simple approach since boat will be trailered and mostly used in fresh water. Plan is to saturate any/all exposed grain, use dynel cloth on bottom (up to garboard) and paint with good old yacht enamel.
The image above is a Caledonian Yawl (very similar lines to the Beach Pea) with a paint scheme that I will mimic. Paint will come from George Kirby Company – a very old New England paint manufacturer. Believe I’m close to matching the colors but will talk with them before I purchase (still probably 3 months out). There’s a fair chance that Kirby provided the paints originally to Two Daughters Boatshop in Vermont so they may have actual mixes.
