We are finally getting the Eastman Boat Building Club “winter” project started this week. Another Fred Shell designed Swifty (somewhat of a hybrid glued lapstrake/stitch and glue build).
While not my favorite boat or techniques used, it does give me something to do until ice gets off lakes and ponds. This is 3rd (and largest) one of these built as part of our intergenerational community boat building program here in Eastman. I’m trying to convince John L (head guy) to tackle something more challenging – he is interested in the Beach Pea I built (WBS) but that may be too much for this group (at least 1200 man hours to build). He also said he has a Penobscot 17 ready to build (materials and plans part of a donation) but worried it is too big etc…
Here is a Beach Pea, Penobscot 17. and a Penobscot 14 for reference. I think the Penobscot 14 has high potential for either my next personal project or part of the Eastman Building Club. Only thing I’m not wild about are the longitudinal stringers – seems like a good place for rot. Will discuss with Arch Davis (Designer/Builder) while at Wooden Boat School this summer.
