Decided to build a kayak storage rack that could be used to:

  1. Stack both kayaks next to fence on side of driveway (Lisa Requirement)
  2. Wheeled so it could roll around driveway for winter storage under deck
  3. Straped to truck bed if we need both kayaks for a journey

Additionally it had to be light (50 lbs or so) and super strong for its weight. Using stock 1×4 pine, Silicon-Bronze ring nails, galvanized 1/4 inch carriage bolts and staining with left over deck stain. Everything except the wood I had laying about. Had to look good and have well designed/executed joinery.

Old Town Sportsman 120 PDL’s have a funny twin sponson hull with a solid keel that starts about 1/2 the boat length. While great in the water, it is difficult to get on a stand or mobile cart because of these features.

Starting Project – realizing the lighting in shop really sucks

Cutting bungs from same stock (White Pine)

Corners – screwed, nails (Anchorfast), and Bunged. Upper and lower supports exactly the same

Decided to bung all 164 screws!

Typical Joinery – Strong and Tight

Corner Cover-up. Needed something to hide the pocket screws used for initial set-up

Front view – slats customer made to fit our Old Town Sportsman PDL’s. Twin sponsons make for unusual design

Just need a little more sanding, paint and install wheels

Almost done – 2nd coat on, drying in the sun. Need some 1 1/2 in carriage bolts to attach wheels to finish off.

Everything fits well

Bundled up and ready for winter.
