Have seen cars at this place many times and decided to check it out. It is an old bog (Philbrick-Cricenti Bog) that is within 1/4 mile of our regular Hannaford’s Supermarket in New London. NH does a great job at protecting these kind of places. In addition to have being nice easy hike with pretty views, I was able to find tamarack (Larch) trees which were/are highly sough after in small wooden boat construction. They are a cross hard/soft wood with pine like needles that turn gold in fall and drop off like leaves. Apparently the wood is rot resistant and bends easily – may see if I can plant some around our yard. Will stop again in spring to see the wildflowers – suppose to be some of the most rarely seen foliage in all of New England there.
Fall colors not very good this year due to severe draught all summer, Anderson Pond is at least 1-ft low, and I would estimate Eastman Pond is close to 2-ft down.
